Eric Chelle Greenlights Arthur Okonkwo for Super Eagles Debut

Eric Chelle Greenlights Arthur Okonkwo for Super Eagles Debut — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is poised to earn his first senior cap after the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed his inclusion in next month’s Unity Cup squad. Okonkwo recently received FIFA clearance to switch allegiance from England, where he featured at U16, U17 and U18 levels. A federation official told ESPN that his enthusiasm for the Super Eagles helped speed up the process. New head coach Eric Chelle has personally backed Okonkwo’s immediate integration. The 24-year-old enjoyed a strong Championship campaign, keeping 10 clean sheets in 37 league matches and making 42 appearances across all competitions. Nigeria, reigning Unity Cup champions, begin their title defence against Zimbabwe on May 26, 2026 at The Valley in England.

Do you think Okonkwo's recent FIFA clearance will give him the confidence to excel in Nigeria's Unity Cup squad?

I'm sure that FIFA green light will fire him up, ready to guard our goalposts with that next-level swagger.

True, that clearance might spark his confidence, but I wonder if he can prove himself under Unity Cup pressure.

Getting his first senior call-up is promising, but there's a big jump from youth internationals to starting in a senior Unity Cup match.

He's unfamiliar with many teammates and the local football culture after playing abroad, so expecting him to settle instantly seems optimistic.

Coaches should integrate him gradually during training and warm-up sessions before giving him full matches to boost his confidence and adaptation.
