South Africa Rejects Ghana’s Call to Discuss Xenophobia at AU Summit

South Africa Rejects Ghana’s Call to Discuss Xenophobia at AU Summit — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Ghana urged the African Union to address recent xenophobic attacks on migrants in South Africa. The request included investigations into human rights violations and calls for stronger protection for foreign nationals. In response, South Africa’s International Relations Department said it condemned the violence and directed law enforcement to act swiftly. It warned against unverified reports that could inflame tensions and expressed regret over Ghana’s decision to escalate the issue to the AU. South Africa remains open to diplomatic dialogue and noted that if the AU places the topic on its agenda, it will also propose discussions on migration’s push and pull factors, including governance, rule of law, and democracy.

It seems odd that South Africa's Foreign Affairs department would dismiss Ghana's call despite international pressure for migrant protection.

E no clear how rejecting Ghana's plea will solve any problems, especially when migrants still face violence on South African streets.

The AU could set up an independent monitoring team for member states to report xenophobic incidents immediately and ensure transparent investigations.
