Hausa Land Isn’t Poor – It Needs Better Revenue Organisation

Many believe Northern Nigeria, including Hausa land, lacks wealth. Yet the region consumes nearly 60% of Nigeria’s cement, even though it holds about 55% of the population by NIN figures. Those purchases reflect real income and spending power. The challenge isn’t poverty but weak revenue collection. With over 60 million people in the Northwest, straightforward daily taxes could generate enormous funds—potentially ₦120 billion per day or ₦40 trillion a year. Effective organisation would unlock this capacity and fund development. Hausa land and Nigeria as a whole aren’t poor. Success depends on unity and collective effort to build systems that channel resources to where they’re needed.

States could modernise tax agencies with basic training, transparent procedures, and local data mapping to capture Hausa land's real spending power more effectively.
