Japa Is Not a Crime: Challenging Xenophobia Against Nigerians Abroad

Many forget that immigrants in Europe and elsewhere once fled war, famine and persecution in their own lands. Their ancestors japa in search of safety and opportunity. A few Nigerians involved in criminal acts abroad fuel negative stereotypes. Well-meaning travellers face extra scrutiny because of these isolated incidents. Meanwhile, Nigeria hosts large numbers of foreigners without harassment. Until visa bans or stricter policies target our citizens, the noise of xenophobia will persist.
