UK, US, France Among Ten Countries Granting Agrément to Nigeria’s Ambassadorial Nominees

UK, US, France Among Ten Countries Granting Agrément to Nigeria’s Ambassadorial Nominees

The Federal Government confirms that ten countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, France and Ireland, have granted agrément to Nigeria’s ambassadorial nominees. The approvals also cover Qatar, the Republic of Benin, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Senegal and Sierra Leone. Agrément is the formal consent a host nation gives before a diplomat can assume duty. Spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said responses from other countries are still awaited. Under President Tinubu, several missions have operated without substantive ambassadors. Chargés d’affaires currently manage key diplomatic posts. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will announce the induction ceremony date once all agréments are finalised and confirmed by the Presidency.

This diplomatic lineup looks impressive. What criteria do you think these countries considered when granting agrément to our ambassadorial nominees?

Absolutely, this grouping reflects Nigeria's careful selection and the partners' confidence in our nominees.

You have a point; they probably weighed past diplomatic record, bilateral priorities, and reputation before giving the nod.

It's interesting that major powers like the US and France approved nominees so quickly, while other strategic neighbours were slower to respond.

Celebrating these approvals seems premature. Diplomatic assent doesn't ensure effective ambassadorship or stronger bilateral ties.

The government should quickly conduct orientation sessions for these nominees and outline clear goals for each posting to maximise diplomatic impact.
