WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency
The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak in eastern DR Congo and neighbouring Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The alert follows confirmed cases of the Bundibugyo strain in multiple locations, including capital cities. In Ituri province there are around 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths. A confirmed patient in the rebel-held city of Goma and cross-border movement raise fears the outbreak could be larger than reported. WHO calls on both countries to set up emergency operation centres for surveillance, tracing and infection control. Confirmed cases should be isolated until two negative tests at least 48 hours apart. Neighbouring states must step up health reporting but avoid travel bans.
