Werder Bremen’s Fritz Admits Loan Gamble on Boniface Fell Short

Werder Bremen’s Fritz Admits Loan Gamble on Boniface Fell Short

Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz has acknowledged the club took a major risk signing Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface on loan from Bayer Leverkusen last summer. The Nigerian forward struggled for form and fitness, managing only two assists and failing to find the net in 11 appearances. In an interview with a German outlet, Fritz conceded that the gamble on Boniface has not delivered the expected results.

It's odd to see a club admit a loan signing was a major risk after a player offers two assists but no goals.

Saying the gamble fell short feels unfair; adaptation takes time, and judging Boniface on one short loan seems premature.

A better approach might be designing a tailored fitness and acclimatization plan before sending him out on another loan spell.
