World Cup 2026: FIFA Bans Tactical Timeouts During Goalkeeper Injuries
FIFA will no longer allow players to leave the pitch for coaching when a goalkeeper receives treatment. Referees will keep teams on the field while the injured keeper is attended. The rule aims to stop “goalkeeper tactical timeouts” that teams use to regroup and disrupt opponents’ rhythm. All 48 World Cup coaches have been briefed on the directive by referees’ chief Pierluigi Collina. The change will be in force at the 2026 tournament alongside three-minute hydration breaks each half. FIFA also approved a new VAR protocol to review certain attacking fouls before play restarts.
