Ogun Waterside’s Future: Abiodun Revives OKLNG and Fast-Tracks Deep Sea Port

Ogun Waterside’s Future: Abiodun Revives OKLNG and Fast-Tracks Deep Sea Port

Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has unveiled plans to revive the long-dormant Olokola Liquefied Natural Gas project and fast-track the proposed Ogun Deep Sea Port. He announced this during the commissioning of the reconstructed Gao-Ibiade Road, which is designed to prepare the coastal communities for an anticipated surge in industrial and maritime activity. The governor revealed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has approved the OKLNG revival. He highlighted recent premium crude discoveries in the area and outlined ambitions for a new refinery, naval base and oil storage facilities. Improved road networks, including the upcoming J4–Gao Road extension to Abigi, are set to boost connectivity and support incoming investments. Abiodun said these strategic infrastructure projects will transform Ogun Waterside into a key oil, gas and logistics hub. Local representatives and the Commissioner for Works have welcomed the initiatives, urging further phases of road reconstruction to fully unlock the region’s economic potential.

For sure, the port and OKLNG revival could create jobs, improve infrastructure, and support small traders in the area.

It's interesting that the deep sea port hinges on Gao-Ibiade road improvements, but the timeline seems overly optimistic given past delays.

I'm not convinced a port and gas project alone will cure unemployment or prevent environmental risks without firmer regulations in place.

Local vendors and transport operators should start planning routes around the reconstructed Gao-Ibiade roadway to leverage increased traffic and business.
