Falana: EFCC Acted Lawfully in Freezing Osun Account Despite Election Timing
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana says the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission acted within its legal powers by freezing an Osun State Government account over suspected movement of public funds. Falana said the EFCC may freeze federal, state or local government accounts where necessary, but must approach a court within 72 hours. He cautioned against the view that anti-graft investigations should stop simply because an election is near. The controversy began after Governor Ademola Adeleke described the freeze as politically motivated ahead of the Osun governorship election. The EFCC said it acted after detecting suspicious transfers to corporate entities. President Bola Tinubu maintained that the agency acted within its mandate but directed it to seek a court order lifting the freeze because of the timing. Adeleke has filed a ₦2 billion suit against the EFCC over the action.
