Ajiran Residents, CSO Seek Reassignment of Akanbi’s Case Over Fair-Trial Concerns

The Centre for Citizens Right's Protection and residents of Ajiran have petitioned the Lagos State Chief Judge to reassign the criminal case involving Alhaji Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi from Justice A.T. Muyideen’s court. The group said it is seeking to protect fair-hearing rights, due process and public confidence in the judiciary. It alleged that Akanbi was remanded before his plea was taken and that his bail application was not given urgent consideration despite his reported medical condition. According to the petition, Akanbi was arraigned on July 3 after being brought to court in a wheelchair. The case and pending applications were adjourned to November, while an attempt to seek an accelerated hearing at the Vacation Court was reportedly declined. The petitioners want the case reassigned, the handling of the bail application reviewed and an administrative inquiry into whether the proceedings have met constitutional standards of fairness and impartiality.
