Uganda Halts Cross-Border Transport and Flights Over Ebola Fears
Uganda’s government has suspended all public transport links with the Democratic Republic of the Congo for an initial four-week period. Ferries, buses and other passenger services across the busy Ituri border have been put on hold to prevent the spread of a major Ebola outbreak. All flights to DR Congo will also be grounded within 48 hours, though cargo trucks and food supplies will continue to cross the border to avoid disrupting essential trade and humanitarian aid. The move follows two suspected Ebola cases among Congolese nationals who entered Uganda. One death was reported, but later tests confirmed no active Ebola infections in Uganda after a suspected patient tested negative twice. Health officials warn the risk of importation remains high due to strong community ties on both sides of the border. Uganda’s Health Ministry Permanent Secretary stated vigilance is critical given the country’s proximity to the outbreak epicentre.
