Preserving Ibusa’s Civil War Memories: Seeking Eyewitness Testimonies

We are launching a project to record oral histories from Ibusa residents who witnessed the Nigerian Civil War. As survivors age, their first-hand accounts risk being lost forever. Every testimony adds depth to our community’s story. Interviews will start with open narratives, then follow up with questions on dates, locations, and military operations. Early accounts have revealed the displacement of the Senior Diokpa, the refugee camps at St. Patrick’s College, and the brave efforts of local clergy and women who buried civilians under fire. Another survivor described fleeing through the Umuodafe forest near today’s Asaba International Airport, suffering injury when a bomb exploded. If you know elders who lived through the conflict—as soldiers, refugees, traders, medical workers, or community leaders—please encourage them to share their experiences. These interviews will form the basis of a forthcoming community history. Every story matters in preserving Ibusa’s legacy.
