Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso says he has recovered from the disappointment of being sacked by Real Madrid after only seven months in charge. Alonso was dismissed in January following Real Madrid's Supercopa de España final defeat to Barcelona. He said the experience left a “scar” but also gave him time to reflect on his tactics, adaptation and man-management. The former Bayer Leverkusen coach now faces the task of rebuilding Chelsea after the club finished 10th in the 2025-26 Premier League season and missed out on European football.

Being dismissed after a final defeat can leave a lasting scar, so it is notable that he says he has recovered.

Does saying he has moved on necessarily mean the dismissal no longer affects him?

Recovery is good, but moving past the sacking will not automatically make the Chelsea job any less demanding.

Chelsea should focus on giving him a clear plan and patience, rather than judging everything through his short Real Madrid spell.
