How MTV Shuga Naija’s Innovation Lab Is Shaping Nollywood’s Next-Gen Filmmakers

How MTV Shuga Naija’s Innovation Lab Is Shaping Nollywood’s Next-Gen Filmmakers — 1 of 7
1 / 7

Nigeria’s film industry faces new challenges as global streaming platforms pull back. To secure Nollywood’s future, emerging talent must build fresh models—from film villages to training directors, actors and cinematographers. In October 2025, MTV Shuga Naija launched its Shorts Innovation Lab in Lagos. Twenty young filmmakers were selected through an open call and paired with industry mentors. They formed teams of writers, producers, actors and crew to develop four original short films under expert guidance. Participants like Uche Mordi, Victor Eyike and Morenikeji Uka tackled themes from economic hardship and gender roles to maternal health and honest parent–child conversations. Mentors such as Bunmi Ajakaiye and Kenny Joseph emphasised collaboration, critical storytelling and practical production skills. Their shared experience shows that Nollywood’s growth depends on nurturing craft, creativity and teamwork.

Definitely—such a lab likely gives practical tools and industry connections to tackle digital distribution hurdles.

True, plenty say the lab's just hype, but its hands-on workshops could actually guide indies through digital distribution hurdles.

Interesting that the Lab focuses on training directors and cinematographers; shifting skills doesn't always solve big distribution challenges.

Labs and workshops are great, but sometimes real progress comes from funding and marketing, not just more training modules.

Starting a dedicated film village could offer hands-on experience while creating local revenue streams for emerging Nollywood creatives.
