Nigerian Navy Seizes 44,000L of Illegal AGO, Arrests Eight in Rivers State

Nigerian Navy Seizes 44,000L of Illegal AGO, Arrests Eight in Rivers State — 1 of 5
1 / 5

The Nigerian Navy intercepted two wooden boats carrying about 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil in the Degema, Ogbogoro and Ogbologo areas of Rivers State. An Anti-Crude Oil Theft patrol team from NNS Pathfinder arrested eight suspects. Additional armed accomplices fled upon sighting the naval patrol. The seized products and suspects are now in custody pending further investigation and possible prosecution. This success is part of Operation DELTA SENTINEL and follows directives from the Chief of the Naval Staff to step up efforts against crude oil theft, illegal bunkering and other maritime crimes. The Navy remains committed to intelligence-driven operations, enhanced patrols and inter-agency collaboration to protect Nigeria’s critical national assets and economic interests.

They did nab 44,000L, but will that single raid truly dent these illegal operations long-term?

It seems surprising that such a large volume of illegally refined AGO could be transported on wooden boats without detection.

I'm not convinced this crackdown will deter persistent oil thieves given recurring patterns in the Niger Delta.

Local communities might strengthen collaboration with naval patrols to report suspicious activities more promptly.
