Late-Night Shooting in Johannesburg Settlement Leaves 12 Dead, 9 Injured
A group of at least ten armed men arrived in a minivan at an informal settlement in Johannesburg’s Cleveland suburb late on Tuesday night. They moved through the area, opening fire on residents at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle. Nine men and three women were struck; eleven died at the scene and another succumbed to injuries in hospital. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and the vehicle. Provincial commissioner Tommy Mthombeni described the killings as “insane, heartless and barbaric.” While investigators explore possible links to illegal mining gangs after a recent firearms seizure, no motive has been confirmed. This incident adds to a string of mass shootings in South Africa this year. Informal settlements often overlap abandoned mines where rival criminal groups clash over gold deposits, fueling violence and turf wars.
