Otti Honors Returning Officer by Naming Umuahia Bus Terminal After Prof. Nnenna Oti

Otti Honors Returning Officer by Naming Umuahia Bus Terminal After Prof. Nnenna Oti — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Governor Alex Otti has named the newly completed multimodal bus terminal in Umuahia after Prof. Nnenna Oti, who served as the INEC returning officer in the 2023 Abia governorship election. This tribute recognizes her courage, integrity and commitment to truth. The terminal can accommodate over 340 buses simultaneously and forms part of an integrated transport system linked to upgraded junctions, bus shelters and electric bus services across the state. Independent power and water systems ensure uninterrupted operations. Twenty electric buses are already operating on intra- and inter-city routes, with another twenty due in the coming weeks and thirty more before year end. Commuters will soon access real-time arrival and departure information for each station. The governor urged residents to protect the facility against vandalism and misuse, and reminded them of their tax obligations to sustain infrastructure. He also inaugurated several major roads in Umuahia, including the Express Tower-Onuimo Road (now Uma Ukpai Way), Ahiaeke-Okwuta-Bende Road and others.

Honoring an INEC returning officer by naming a bus terminal after her is notable, though gestures like this often feel more symbolic than impactful.

I respect Prof. Oti's integrity, but it feels like naming a bus terminal risks turning a public service into a political trophy instead of addressing commuters' real challenges.

Local transport officials should monitor terminal operations closely and gather commuter feedback to ensure the facility meets real needs beyond symbolic naming.
