52-Year-Old Woman Collapses and Dies at Federal High Court in Benin

52-Year-Old Woman Collapses and Dies at Federal High Court in Benin

During her arraignment at the Federal High Court in Benin City on March 31, 2026, a 52-year-old woman identified as Titilayo suddenly collapsed and died. She had been arrested by the Edo State Task Force and handed over to the NDLEA for allegedly selling a substance suspected to be a hard drug known as loud. Witnesses accused the NDLEA of negligence, claiming she appeared unwell before her court appearance. However, the Edo State NDLEA commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, denied any wrongdoing. He stated she walked into the courtroom unassisted and that the cause of death remains unclear pending an autopsy. Security concerns arose when a crowd gathered at the scene, causing officers to secure other suspects. The commander offered condolences to the family and affirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring the health and fair trial of all accused persons.

Does anyone know what emergency protocols the court has for detainees who fall ill suddenly during arraignments?

Yes, it's absolutely important the court has clear procedures for immediate medical aid when someone collapses.

I'm not sure they even have special detainee procedures, most courts follow general emergency steps for everyone present.

It's worrying that a detainee collapsed so quickly; this case raises questions about the health checks before court appearances.

Perhaps the court did follow required procedures, and this tragic collapse wasn't due to negligence but sheer misfortune.

Courts should publish a clear protocol for medical emergencies and ensure attendants screen vulnerable individuals before hearings.
