AI Can Write Code Fast: What Skills Should Developers Master Next?

If AI can write code faster than developers, what should developers focus on mastering now? Writing syntax was never the hardest part of the job. The real challenge is knowing what to build, why it matters, when to reject a feature, and how to debug systems that have become difficult for anyone to fully understand. AI can generate code quickly, but it cannot fully replace judgment during changing client requirements, production failures, or conversations with non-technical stakeholders. Experience, product sense, communication and the ability to ask the right questions may become even more valuable. What skills do you think developers should prioritise over the next five years?

If syntax becomes cheaper to produce, which skill will matter most in everyday development: defining the problem, judging trade-offs, or debugging complex systems?

Are we assuming AI-generated code is reliable enough that developers will spend less time checking it?

The useful reminder here is that fast code is not automatically valuable code. Understanding why a feature matters still shapes the outcome.

AI may speed up writing, but developers should not assume syntax is irrelevant. Clear code and language fundamentals still help when things break.
