Presidency: Local Government Autonomy Is Key to Tackling Poverty
The Presidency says local governments must lead Nigeria’s fight against poverty since they are closest to grassroots communities. The Special Adviser on Economic Affairs to the Vice President explained that President Tinubu is pushing for stronger local government autonomy and increased state funding to improve service delivery. He highlighted recent gains, noting that pensioners now receive payments more reliably and civil servants no longer face long arrears. Reflecting on visits to Lagos local governments in 1999, he recalled how struggling citizens could approach local council chairmen directly and receive immediate support. By empowering local authorities, the Presidency believes poverty solutions will become more effective and responsive to people’s everyday needs.
