Sowore Faces Remand as Court Sets Deadline to Perfect N200m Bail

Sowore Faces Remand as Court Sets Deadline to Perfect N200m Bail

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered online publisher and AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore to return to Kuje Correctional Centre if he fails to meet bail conditions by 4pm today. Justice Mohammed Umar initially granted Sowore a N200 million bail bond, required him to surrender his international passport and produce two sureties—one traditional ruler and one Abuja landowner—subject to prosecution verification. At Monday’s hearing, DSS counsel Akinlolu Kehinde SAN told the court that Sowore had yet to deposit his passport or secure the sureties and asked for a remand order. After Sowore’s lawyer pleaded for more time, the judge extended the deadline to the close of work today and adjourned until 13 July.

What impact do you think Sowore's remand and bail deadline will have on public trust in our justice system?

True, delaying bail deadlines in such high-stakes case can deepen doubts about fairness and transparency.

It's surprising that such a high bail sum was set so quickly before confirming his ability to meet those conditions.

I'm not convinced this remand deadline will change anything; authorities have missed several deadlines in similar cases before.

Journalists and civil society groups should track his court appearances closely and demand transparent reporting on compliance with bail conditions.
