SADC Rebukes Madagascar Junta as Authoritarian Rule Deepens
Eight months on from the October 2025 coup, Madagascar’s transition is slipping from promised renewal into entrenched authoritarianism. The Southern African Development Community has issued its strongest demands yet: the release of political prisoners, an end to arbitrary arrests of opposition and Generation Z activists, and the return of political exiles. This marks a shift from cautious warning to blunt condemnation. Domestically, the High Constitutional Court has been repackaged with junta loyalists, erasing any real check on power. Opposition MPs and civil society figures face vague charges and rapid arrests, while a proposed social media law threatens digital dissent. Meanwhile, ties with Russia have deepened. Parliamentary leaders and electoral officials have trained in Moscow, and Russian security forces now protect the presidential guard. These developments cast doubt on any genuine path to free elections.
