EFCC Demands Justice Ojukwu Preside Over Sule Lamido Retrial

EFCC Demands Justice Ojukwu Preside Over Sule Lamido Retrial

The EFCC has insisted that the retrial of former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido and his sons be conducted by the original trial judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, now sitting in Calabar. Counsel Chile Okoroma appeared before Justice Peter Lifu in Abuja and explained that the commission had written to Chief Judge John Tsoho for a fiat. This request follows a Supreme Court directive and notes that 17 witnesses had already testified before proceedings were halted. Defence counsel Joe Agi did not oppose the application. Justice Lifu adjourned the matter to April 30 for re-arraignment or further proceedings in the interest of justice. The retrial stems from a January Supreme Court ruling that set aside a Court of Appeal judgment and reinstated Justice Ojukwu’s order. Lamido faces 37 counts relating to alleged abuse of office and money laundering during his 2007–2015 tenure, involving his sons and associates.

What might happen to the retrial if Justice Ojukwu remains unavailable to preside over Lamido's case in Calabar?

Is there provision for appointing a different judge if Ojukwu can't handle the retrial?

Not sure EFCC insists on one judge only. Retrial could proceed with another judge or face delays.

It does seem surprising the EFCC would insist on Justice Ojukwu after her transfer to Calabar instead of accepting a local Abuja judge.

I'm not convinced this demand for the same judge guarantees a fairer verdict, maybe a fresh perspective could be better.

If the EFCC wants consistency, they should request a clear timeline for Justice Ojukwu's schedule and avoid unnecessary delays.
