German Court Sentences 12 Nigerians in International Romance Scam

German Court Sentences 12 Nigerians in International Romance Scam

A court in Munich has sentenced 12 Nigerians for their roles in a cross-border romance scam network. The defendants were aged 34 to 55. Prison terms range from three years and four months to eight and a half years. They were convicted of defrauding victims and laundering the proceeds. Scammers assumed false identities. They posed as US soldiers on social media and dating apps. They tricked victims into transferring money for bogus medical, travel or customs fees. Most victims were women, the elderly or people with disabilities. Investigators traced funds to an organisation known as Neo Black Movement of Africa, or Black Axe. German police arrested the suspects in April 2024 after years of surveillance.
