Pope Leo XIV Embarks on Historic 11-Day African Tour
Pope Leo XIV will launch an 11-day visit to Africa beginning April 13. He will travel over 18,000 kilometres through Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea. This marks his first major international trip since becoming head of the Catholic Church. In Algeria, the pope becomes the first pontiff to enter the country. He will tour the Great Mosque of Algiers, meet President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and visit Annaba, the home of his Augustinian order. Rights groups hope he will speak on religious freedom. In Cameroon, he will focus on peace and reconciliation in the English-speaking northwest. In Angola, his message will highlight economic justice and the fair distribution of resources. In Equatorial Guinea, he is set to address human rights and social justice while guiding diplomatic sensitivities under President Obiang’s long rule.
