85-Year-Old Man in Kano Jailed for 14 Years Over Rape Conviction

85-Year-Old Man in Kano Jailed for 14 Years Over Rape Conviction

A High Court in the Gwarzo Division of Kano State has sentenced 85-year-old Malam Isah Abdullahi to 14 years in prison for rape. The offence took place on November 30, 2024, in Sauna, Gabasawa Local Government Area. The Kano State Ministry of Justice prosecuted the case before High Court No. 24 and presented evidence that secured the conviction. Justice Aisha Mahmud delivered judgment on March 27, 2026. She acknowledged a plea for leniency from the defence but applied the full extent of the law. Solicitor-General Salisu Muhammad Tahir led the prosecution team. The Attorney-General, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, commended the effort and reiterated the ministry’s commitment to protecting victims and holding perpetrators accountable.

It's striking that the court applied the full 14-year term even though the accused is already 85 years old.

I get the need for justice, but locking up someone past retirement age feels more symbolic than an effective deterrent.
