Madrid Court Upholds Right to Call Jehovah’s Witnesses a “Destructive Sect”
The Provincial Court of Madrid has confirmed a ruling that protects former members’ right to call Jehovah’s Witnesses a “destructive sect.” The court dismissed an appeal by the religious organisation and found that these criticisms are part of public debate. Judges said freedom of expression prevails when discussions concern public interest. They rejected attempts by Jehovah’s Witnesses to shut down the victims’ association and withdraw its name, website and social media accounts. The court noted that testimonies from ex-members about social isolation and psychological pressure provided a sufficient factual basis. It also said open debate is vital for public health and general interest. Representatives of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Spain voiced concerns and may appeal to the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the victims’ association welcomed the decision, saying it reaffirms their right to speak out.
