LAWMA Secures 16 Convictions for Illegal Waste Dumping in Lagos

LAWMA Secures 16 Convictions for Illegal Waste Dumping in Lagos

On Monday, 6 July 2026, the Lagos Waste Management Authority secured convictions against 16 offenders at the Oshodi Special Offences and Mobile Court. Each was sentenced to four months in prison for illegal dumping, failing to use assigned waste contractors, and breaching sanitation laws. The convicts were arrested during LAWMA’s surveillance operations at Gbagada Expressway, Anthony Oke, Oworonsoki and Bariga for indiscriminate disposal on road medians and drainage channels. This action underscores the state’s zero-tolerance policy on environmental infractions. Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LAWMA’s Managing Director, emphasized that the convictions send a clear message: environmental laws will be enforced without fear or favour. He urged residents and businesses to register with approved private waste operators and report illegal dumping through official channels. LAWMA plans to intensify surveillance in partnership with security and environmental agencies to maintain a cleaner, healthier Lagos.

To improve results, residents should verify their waste contractor's license and report any unregistered dumpers to LAWMA immediately.
