Police Chief Pledges Neutral Security Support Ahead of 2027 Polls
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has vowed equal security for all political parties and interest groups as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections. He made this commitment in Abuja while hosting an INEC delegation led by its chairman. Disu warned that any officer found showing partisan bias would face disciplinary action. He urged INEC to urgently release and widely publicise the electoral timetable to allow for intelligence mapping, logistics coordination and effective training. He also called for stronger inter-agency collaboration and regular strategic coordination meetings across national, state and local levels. Plans are underway to bring political parties together to sign peace and responsible conduct accords and reduce risks of violence. INEC’s chairman highlighted the importance of security support for credible polls, noting challenges such as violence, vote trading and regional insecurity. He stressed the need for thorough risk analysis, early identification of flashpoints and protective measures for voters and officials.
