US Cuts Citizenship Renunciation Fee by 80% to $450

The US State Department has slashed the fee for formally renouncing US citizenship from $2,350 to $450. The reduction took effect immediately after its publication in the Federal Register. Applicants still face a thorough process. They must confirm in writing and verbally that they understand the consequences, then take a formal oath before a consular officer. The department reviews each case carefully. In 2015, the fee rose to $2,350 to cover higher administrative costs and stricter tax‐reporting rules for Americans abroad. Advocacy groups such as the Association of Accidental Americans challenged that hike in court. Association president Fabien Lehagre called the reduction a major victory. He noted that more than 8,700 people paid the old fee before the change went into effect.
