522 Stranded Nigerians Return to Kano in Government-Assisted Repatriation

522 Stranded Nigerians Return to Kano in Government-Assisted Repatriation

On March 29, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) received 522 returned Nigerians at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport. The group was repatriated from Niamey under a voluntary return initiative supported by the Federal Government. Dr. Nura Abdullahi, head of operations at NEMA Kano, clarified that the exercise was not a forced evacuation. The returnees include 267 adult males, 101 adult females, 82 boys and 72 girls from Kano, Jigawa, Plateau and Bauchi states. Medical teams from the Nigerian Red Cross and a mobile intensive care unit were on hand to assist those with health challenges. The Federal Government provided temporary shelter, food, blankets, mosquito nets and dignity kits. After profiling and verification, the returnees will be transported to their home states. Authorities urged Nigerians to avoid risky migration routes in search of better opportunities.

You're right, they probably battled bad roads, stretched resources and long wait times on their way home.

Do we know if any medical assistance was available en route?

It's interesting that the government calls this voluntary return, yet we rarely hear details on how they ensure migrants really choose to go back.

I'm not convinced the same system works for everyone, some returnees might still need more support to reintegrate effectively.

Local communities could set up welcome centres with job training and counselling to help these returnees adjust and find new opportunities.
