Tinubu Says INEC Is Neutral as Catholic Bishops Demand Credible 2027 Polls

President Bola Tinubu says the Independent National Electoral Commission is neutral and offers equal opportunities to all political parties. He said opposition figures questioning the commission's credibility may be acting out of fear and uncertainty ahead of the 2027 elections. Speaking during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria in Abuja, Tinubu also said his administration is restructuring security institutions, expanding the armed forces and acquiring more equipment to tackle terrorism, banditry and kidnapping. The Catholic bishops raised concerns about insecurity, poverty, access to quality tertiary education and credible elections. They urged the President to strengthen democratic institutions, ensure free and fair elections in 2027, consider the return of mission schools, and guarantee fair treatment for all worshippers. Tinubu said the government would continue poverty-relief measures, including the student loan scheme, and maintained that the economy has stabilised with prosperity ahead.
