Dessers Scores Extra-Time Winner on Panathinaikos Return From Injury

Cyriel Dessers scored the extra-time winner as Panathinaikos beat CSKA Sofia 2-1 away to reach the UEFA Europa Conference League playoff round with a 3-2 aggregate victory. The Super Eagles forward came on in the 65th minute after a lengthy thigh-injury layoff. He struck five minutes into the first half of extra time after Levi Garcia’s opener had been cancelled out by Lasha Dvali. Dessers had not played for club or country since scoring for Panathinaikos against Volos on 14 December 2025. The 31-year-old was also part of Nigeria’s 2025 AFCON squad but missed every match through injury. He was the inaugural Europa Conference League’s top scorer, netting 10 times for Feyenoord in the 2021-22 campaign.

Coming on after a lengthy injury layoff and scoring the extra-time winner is huge. Do you think Dessers can quickly earn a regular starting spot?

Agreed, though one big moment alone should not guarantee a starting place. It is still a strong statement on his return.

That is a memorable return for Dessers. His goal not only settled the away tie but also sent Panathinaikos into the playoff round.

One decisive goal is encouraging, but it may be too early to judge his full return after a long thigh-injury layoff.

The sensible approach is to manage his minutes carefully while building on this confidence boost, especially with more important matches ahead.
