Defence Chief Warns Wars Abroad Fuel Nigeria’s Arms Shortage, Urges Local Production

Defence Chief Warns Wars Abroad Fuel Nigeria’s Arms Shortage, Urges Local Production

At the Nigerian People’s Strategic Conference and Defence Exhibition in Abuja, Defence Minister Christopher Musa warned that ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East and beyond have disrupted Nigeria’s access to military hardware. He noted that major powers often book supplies in advance, leaving Nigeria struggling to secure essential equipment. “The only solution is for us to produce what we need,” he said, praising local defence manufacturers and calling for greater government support. The minister also appealed to the National Assembly to develop a comprehensive database for all Nigerians. He described it as critical to effective policing and the security forces’ ability to track and prevent crime. So where are bandits getting their supply then? I sha hope the spirit of APC hasn’t entered Musa, because this sounds like a typical APC-style excuse—though boosting local arms production is a good idea.

We should start by strengthening oversight of indigenous manufacturers and investing in skill development for defence technicians nationwide.
