JAMB Explains Rationale Behind 16-Year Minimum Admission Age
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has defended its policy requiring a minimum age of 16 for admission into tertiary institutions. JAMB’s Public Communication Adviser, Dr Fabian Benjamin, said the age benchmark is grounded in the National Policy on Education, the Universal Basic Education framework and the 6-3-3-4 system. He noted research linking maturity with better academic performance. The dialogue, organised by the Education Writers’ Association of Nigeria, also reviewed the 2026 admission policy and JAMB’s performance scorecard.
