Tinubu’s Power Promise Was Conditional, Not a Re-Election Pledge — Onanuga
In a recent interview, Bayo Onanuga rejected claims that President Bola Tinubu vowed to skip a second term if electricity supply didn’t improve. He said the president’s remarks at a December 2022 business luncheon were taken out of context and were never an outright pledge. Onanuga highlighted key reforms so far, including the signing of the Electricity Act, measures to end estimated billing, and ramped-up meter production. He noted that many Nigerians are now receiving free meters as part of efforts to close the metering gap. While acknowledging ongoing challenges such as gas shortages, legacy debts of over ₦4 trillion and an outdated transmission grid, he assured that the administration remains committed to structural reforms aimed at delivering reliable power.
