MURIC Alleges Hijab-Wearing Women Were Denied Votes in Osun Election

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has alleged that thousands of hijab-wearing Muslim women were prevented from voting during the Osun State governorship election held on 15 August 2026. In a statement, the group said the alleged incidents occurred across the state. It claimed that some women were asked to remove their hijabs before they could vote, describing this as intimidation, humiliation and disenfranchisement. MURIC accused INEC of failing to properly brief electoral officials on religious freedom. The group said it has video evidence of a woman who alleged she was denied the opportunity to vote because of her hijab. The organisation said the alleged restrictions may have affected the outcome of the election and called for a federal investigation ahead of the 2027 general elections. INEC has not responded to the allegations in this report.
