Okpekpe 10km: Nigerian Winners Receive Full Prize Payout After Doping Clearance
Organisers of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race have confirmed that prize money has been paid in full to Nigerian winners of the 11th edition. The funds, provided by security expert Peter Dunia and his company Oceanwaves, were released after international doping‐control requirements were cleared. First place finishers in each gender category earned ₦3 million, second place took ₦2 million, and third place received ₦1 million. Winners also enjoyed accommodation and public recognition at various stages of the event, underscoring the organisers’ commitment to valuing local athletes. Race Director Zack Amodu highlighted the steady improvement among Nigerian distance runners, noting four athletes broke 31 minutes this year. He thanked the sponsor and urged other companies to invest in athlete development to boost Nigeria’s global competitiveness and create more opportunities for youth. Okpekpe made history as the first World Athletics‐label road race in West Africa and the first with a certified course in the region. The organisers continue to set a benchmark for professional road racing in Nigeria.
