How to Write a Strong Statement of Purpose for Graduate School

A strong Statement of Purpose (SOP) should clearly reflect your experience, research interests and career goals. Graduate school applications are also an opportunity to demonstrate your writing ability. Aim for four to six focused paragraphs. Start by explaining the problem or experience that drew you to the field and the kind of solution you hope to explore. Next, outline your academic background, undergraduate research, relevant skills and preparation for the proposed study. Include leadership, volunteering or extracurricular activities that demonstrate useful soft skills. Clearly state your research interests and explain why you want to work with a particular supervisor. Mention relevant publications, workshops or conferences where applicable. Also explain why you selected the institution, including its facilities, professors, research strengths and alumni network. End with your immediate, short-term and long-term career goals. Begin with a rough draft and revise it several times. Keep the SOP between 500 and 1,000 words, preferably about one page unless the school states otherwise. Use a clear formal font, readable sizing and the required spacing. Ask a trusted third party to proofread before submission, and do not let imposter syndrome stop you from applying.
