Rivers State University Launches Drug-Free Campaign with Student Ambassadors

Rivers State University Launches Drug-Free Campaign with Student Ambassadors — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Rivers State University has flagged off its Drug Integrity Test campaign and inaugurated a team of Drug-Free Ambassadors at the amphitheatre on April 23. This initiative, in partnership with the NDLEA and DSS, is the first of its kind in the South-South region. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, said the policy aims to tackle substance abuse at its root. He announced that all aspirants for student elections must pass the integrity test. Those found using or trafficking drugs will face full legal consequences. NDLEA State Commander Bature Yakubu described the drive as preventive rather than punitive. He urged ambassadors to lead by example and highlighted plans to expand screening facilities and strengthen the Anti-Drug Centre. The campaign reinforces the university’s zero-tolerance stance on drugs. It supports good health and quality education by creating a safe and focused learning environment.

I'm really interested in how the student ambassadors will influence their peers. Do you think this drug-free campaign can truly change behaviours on campus?

How will they track if ambassador efforts actually reduce substance use across campus?

I agree, the ambassadors could set a positive example that encourages healthier choices across campus.

Launching a drug integrity test is a strong move, but partnerships alone won't guarantee student compliance or long-term impact on campus culture.

This campaign's ambition sounds good, but the focus on testing might alienate students instead of encouraging honest dialogue about substance use.

Universities could combine ambassador outreach with peer support groups and regular workshops to keep the anti-drug message active beyond the launch event.
