How I Almost Lost ₦150,000 to a Fake Remote Job Scam
I’m Goodness from Port Harcourt. At 26, I struggled to find a stable remote job, so I jumped at a WhatsApp offer promising ₦150,000 a month. The “HR Manager” sent a link to register on a company portal. After I paid ₦5,000 to “activate” my account, they showed a fake dashboard with my salary credited. Then they demanded ₦25,000 more to withdraw the funds. My alarm bells rang when they threatened to report me to the EFCC for “breach of contract.” I later checked the corporate registry and found the company didn’t exist. I lost ₦5,000—my two weeks of food money—but I’m grateful I didn’t pay more. Please, Nigerians, never pay to get a job. Real employers pay you. Always verify a company’s registration with CAC and don’t rush when they pressure you for fees.
