We Won’t Be Intimidated: First Lady Clarifies Support for Akara and Other Small Traders

We Won’t Be Intimidated: First Lady Clarifies Support for Akara and Other Small Traders

Nigeria’s First Lady defended her remarks on empowering women in small businesses during the inauguration of Abubakar Maje Haruna Hall at the Emir of Hadejia’s Palace in Jigawa State. She explained that the federal support programme covers akara, roasted corn, kuli-kuli and other market traders, including those selling tomatoes, peppers, vegetables, and plantain. The government has allocated ₦100 million to assist 2,000 beneficiaries with ₦50,000 each to grow their businesses. She reaffirmed that criticism will not derail the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to improve livelihoods, reduce poverty and create opportunities beyond oil. She also urged young Nigerians to explore agriculture, citing an orange orchard visit in Benue State as an example of untapped potential.
