In-Flight Smoking Panic: Two Passengers Arrested at Lagos Airport

In-Flight Smoking Panic: Two Passengers Arrested at Lagos Airport

The Airport Police Command at Murtala Muhammed International Airport has taken two men into custody after they smoked cigarettes aboard an Air Peace flight from South Africa. Smoke detectors and alarms were triggered at 7:44pm on July 9, causing panic among passengers and crew. Investigations revealed that the suspects, aged 51 and 43, also had alcohol and became aggressive when cabin crew tried to enforce safety rules. They were handed over by AVSEC personnel for further questioning. The Command’s Commissioner condemned any conduct that endangers aviation safety. Travellers are reminded to follow all airline and aviation personnel directives to ensure safe and orderly flights.

I agree, airlines must tighten no-smoking policies, add smoke detectors and increase crew checks for quick response.

It seems the Airport Police at Murtala Muhammed International Airport may have overreacted if no actual fire was found.

While smoking is banned, arresting them mid-flight could worsen travelers' stress instead of handling it discreetly.

Airlines should include clear smoking instructions in boarding announcements and conduct quick in-flight checks to avoid similar scares.
