EFCC Arraigns Magistrate Kumo for ₦1.4m Bribery, Grants Interim Bail
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged Magistrate Mohammed Kumo with three counts of bribery and extortion at the Gombe State High Court. He pleaded not guilty to receiving ₦1 million and an additional ₦400,000 via a Zenith Bank account linked to court registrar Adamu Ahmed. During the hearing, prosecution counsel Abubakar Aliyu asked the court to remand Kumo in the Gombe State Correctional Centre. Defence counsel Adamu Bawa filed a bail application, which the court granted on an interim basis, noting Kumo’s prior administrative bail and regular court attendance. The case, adjourned to January 13–14, 2026, raises questions about judicial accountability. It follows legal precedents that require National Judicial Council discipline before prosecuting serving judges under the Corrupt Practices Act 2000.
