Osun NUJ Warns Against Escalating Political Violence Ahead of Governorship Poll
The Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has condemned the rising wave of political violence ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election. The council warns that killings, intimidation, and property destruction threaten peaceful polling and could undermine electoral credibility. A recent report by the Kimpact Development Initiative recorded 44 election-related violent incidents in Osun between October 2025 and June 2026, resulting in 13 deaths. The union urged security agencies to maintain professionalism, protect lives, and bring perpetrators to justice regardless of political affiliation. Political parties and candidates were called on to pursue issue-based campaigns and restrain inflammatory rhetoric. Residents, especially young people, were reminded not to be recruited for violence. Journalists were urged to uphold ethical reporting standards and avoid sensationalism during the election period.
