Atiku Abubakar Warns ₦50,000 WAEC and NECO Fees Will Shut Children Out of School

Atiku Abubakar Warns ₦50,000 WAEC and NECO Fees Will Shut Children Out of School

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the plan to hike WAEC and NECO examination fees to ₦50,000 from 2027. He says many Nigerian families are already struggling with rising food, transport and electricity costs. Atiku warned that steep exam and Federal Unity School fee increases could force parents to choose between feeding their families and educating their children. He argued that higher fees risk swelling the ranks of out-of-school children and shutting bright students out of university admission due to unaffordable costs. He urged President Bola Tinubu to reverse the proposed increases and focus on investing in classrooms, laboratories, libraries and hostels. Atiku also called for wide stakeholder engagement to find sustainable funding for education without adding new financial burdens on parents.

I'm not convinced steep exam fees are the only barrier; poor infrastructure and teacher shortages play a bigger role.
