Leipzig Police Shoot Escaped Tiger After Keeper Attack
A tiger broke free from a private enclosure near Leipzig and attacked a 72-year-old keeper before police fatally shot it in a nearby garden. The big cat, believed to be owned by trainer Carmen Zander, escaped on May 17 and was on the loose for less than 30 minutes. The injured man was taken to hospital, though his condition remains unclear. Local residents and animal rights groups have criticised the cramped conditions at the Dolzig industrial site, calling for stricter rules on private ownership of dangerous wildlife. Officials, including the Dolzig mayor, have demanded the enclosure’s removal. PETA has renewed calls for stronger regulations after previously suing to have the animals relocated, arguing that the tigers were confined in barren cages.
