Wildfire Races Through Southern Spain, Leaves 12 Dead and 23 Missing

A fast-moving wildfire has swept through Almería province in southern Spain, killing at least 12 people and leaving 23 unaccounted for. The blaze erupted near Los Gallardos and tore through dry vegetation and rural areas popular with expatriates. Strong winds and scorching temperatures helped it cover 15 kilometres in just two hours, trapping residents with little time to escape. More than 150 firefighters, backed by 220 military personnel, helicopters and aircraft, are battling the inferno. Authorities have evacuated around 1,000 residents while crews search for missing individuals.
