Penalty Drama Sees Arsenal Held 1-1 by Atlético in UCL Semi-final First Leg

Penalty Drama Sees Arsenal Held 1-1 by Atlético in UCL Semi-final First Leg

Arsenal took the lead just before half-time when Viktor Gyökeres converted a penalty in the 44th minute after a foul inside the box. Atlético Madrid levelled early in the second half through Julian Alvarez, also from the spot following a VAR review. The equaliser swung momentum, but Arsenal’s defence, led by goalkeeper David Raya, managed to repel sustained pressure. Late controversy erupted when a second penalty was awarded to Arsenal only to be overturned on VAR review. Both sides had chances in stoppage time, with Nahuel Molina firing over for Atlético and Declan Rice denied by a block at the other end. The draw leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg, setting up another tense encounter for a place in the Champions League final.

They should target quicker transitions after half-time and reinforce box marking to minimize spot-kick chances in the second leg.
